the Cooling Tower
Environmental design must work with water rather than against it, this consideration is becoming more pressing in today’s climate with water shortages and extreme flooding seen globally. Water efficiency inside buildings is a growing trend in most building regulations. Studio DS designed the Cooling Tower as a structure that not only provided a unique Interior Design component to the project but also had a strong sustainability agenda.
The form provides a large surface area for roof rainwater runoff harvesting through the central column pipework. The rainwater collected in the retention tank is reused as greywater within the building for toilet flushing, maintenance of the building (window washing) and irrigation for the landscape. Every effort to retain as much water as possible was considered due to the number of waterways, irrigation and potential for grey water harvesting.
Fresh air is supplied through outlets located within the Cooling Tower column with extract at roof level.
Feature lighting is included to provide a variable lighting effect to the Cooling Tower for standard or special event lighting.
